Physical Therapy for Knee Pain
Your knee is an extremely complex joint as it helps our bodies perform extremely important functions like walking and standing. With each step you take, your knee absorbs up to 2-3 times your body weight! With this amount of weight put on the joint, daily usage of our knees combined with more strenuous exercise like running can cause injury and wear and tear to this joint. While some knee pain can be taken care of with some rest, other underlying conditions may be present and may require you to see a doctor or physical therapist.
What causes knee pain?
Because of the frequent use of this joint, injury and pain can be common, especially for those who stand, walk, or run a lot. Aside from overuse, knee pain may be caused by a number of different conditions or injuries, including:
- Knee bursitis
- Fractures
- Ligament Strains and Tears
- Dislocated Kneecap
- Arthritis
- Poor Movement Mechanics
- Muscle Strains and Tears
While it’s not always possible to eliminate knee pain from developing, there are certain ways to help avoid it, like using correct body mechanics, stretching before exercising, and resting when appropriate.
